Scouting was his life.  He started as a cub scout in 1935 and became a scout leader after WWII. After his return from Indonesia he started his own scout group: Groep 67 'De Zwervers'.  The name which means  'Wanderers' was chosen since they were moving from one scout home to another finally ending up in the attic of the Pestalozzi girls school on Nassaukade 12 in Amsterdam.
